The Maiden – British IPA
OG 1.059 / IBU 56 / ABV 5.75
Ever wonder, “Why India Pale Ale?” Well, late in the 1700s during the British occupation of India, brewers at Burton on Trent in Staffordshire England created and shipped higher strength, heavily hopped ales able to survive the long colonial voyages by discouraging growths of wild yeasts and bacteria.
Given our modern pandemic, our beers were also consigned to export containers and maiden voyages. So we revisited this historical style, and brewed an IPA with a modern English hop profile. Not widely used in these Colonies – UK Target, Progress and Challenger hops help impart an herbaceous spiciness and earthiness to The Maiden.
As we enjoy a quart (or three) sequestered in our own hinterlands, we hope The Maiden whispers to us with the weight of history something of the past and the considered social distancing of “The Colonies.”
